Dr. Chanjuan Chen is a designer and art educator. She works as an Associate Professor in the Department of Design at the University of North Texas (UNT). Dr. Chen joined UNT after teaching as an Assistant Professor in the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State University. She holds both a BFA and an MFA in Fashion Design, and a PhD in Art Education. In addition to teaching, she also has industry experience working as a fashion designer, technical designer, and graphic designer in China and the United States.
Sustainability concerns are paramount for the future of the fashion industry and fashion academia, therefore Dr. Chen's creative scholarship has focused on reducing textile waste and increasing garment longevity. These practices are guided by three methodologies to promote sustainable processes: transformability, modularity, and upcycling.
Additionally, Dr. Chen’s research is deeply rooted in innovation and collaboration. She believes in the power of bringing diverse perspectives and skills together to tackle complex real-world challenges. From grants to interdisciplinary collaborations, her work bridges design, technology, and education to explore how emerging tools like generative AI can transform creative practices and learning environments.
